What is the minimum age for axe throwing at Alma Park?
Axe throwing at Alma Park is available from age 12, so families and groups with teenagers can enjoy this exciting activity together. It's a great way to build confidence and coordination while having fun. Children and teenagers must be supervised by an adult.
Do I need any previous experience to try axe throwing at Alma Park?
No experience is needed. Alma Park welcomes first-time axe throwers, with experienced instructors to guide you through the activity. Our money-back guarantee if you don't land a successful throw reflects our confidence in our instruction and in making the activity accessible to everyone.
Do I need to be strong to throw an axe?
No. Technique matters more than strength. Alma Park provides axes in different sizes, so everyone can have a go and enjoy landing a successful throw, whatever their level of strength.
How safe is axe throwing?
Safety comes first at Alma Park. Our purpose-built throwing areas and close supervision by trained staff help keep everyone protected. We use checked equipment to minimise risk and have installed additional entry barriers in front of the bays for extra protection.
How does the money-back guarantee work?
This guarantee reflects our confidence that our instructors can help every participant land a successful throw. If you haven't hit the target within the first hour, we will refund your payment. It's part of our commitment to giving you a rewarding experience.
What should I wear for axe throwing?
Comfort is key. Wear ordinary casual clothes that allow you to move freely. Closed shoes are compulsory to protect your feet. Flip-flops, sandals and similar footwear are not allowed.
Do I need axe-throwing experience before visiting Alma Park?
Not at all. Alma Park welcomes beginners and experienced throwers alike. Our instructors will introduce you to the activity and help you improve your technique quickly. We guarantee that every participant can experience the satisfaction of a successful throw.
How do I hold the axe correctly?
Hold the axe firmly but without tensing up, with your thumb running along the handle. The axe should be in line with your forearm. A good grip and stance improve accuracy and control. Regular practice will help you refine your technique.
Can I take part in axe throwing if I have been drinking alcohol?
No. For safety reasons, you must not throw axes while under the influence of alcohol. Everyone's safety comes first. Once you have finished axe throwing, you are welcome to choose from our range of alcoholic drinks.
Can I bring my own axe or knife?
For everyone's safety, you may not bring your own throwing equipment, such as axes or knives. We provide carefully selected, checked equipment for all participants.
Does my booking include all the equipment I need?
Yes. Your booking at Alma Park includes everything you need for the activity: a full safety briefing, a dedicated throwing lane, the throwing equipment and a target. A wide choice of food and drinks is also available to round off your visit.
How far from the target should I stand?
The usual throwing distance is between 3.5 and 6 metres from the target. This may be adjusted to suit your technique and experience. The aim is to find a distance that feels comfortable and allows you to throw accurately and safely.
What should I do if the axe doesn't stick in the target?
If your axe doesn't stick in the target, a small change in position may help. If the axe hits with the top of its head, it has often rotated too far; try moving slightly closer. If it hits with the handle, it may not have rotated far enough; try moving slightly further back. These small adjustments can help you find the right throwing distance for your technique.
What happens if my group or I don't follow the instructions?
At Alma Park, we want every guest to have a safe, enjoyable experience. If you do not follow our staff's safety instructions, we reserve the right to exclude individuals or groups from axe throwing to prevent potential risks. Please understand that no refund will be given in these circumstances: everyone's safety is our priority.
The History of Axe Throwing
Axe throwing is more than a modern leisure activity: it has a long history across cultures around the world. Axes were survival tools in the Stone Age, when early humans made stone axes without handles for hunting and building shelters. Over time, axes developed wooden handles and were made from materials including stone, copper, bronze, iron and eventually steel.
In the Middle Ages, different types of axe were designed for different purposes, including the archer's axe as both a tool and a weapon, and the battle axe for soldiers. Another well-known axe, the tomahawk, was used almost exclusively by Indigenous peoples in North America. War tomahawks were thrown, while pipe tomahawks served ceremonial and diplomatic purposes.
Axe throwing as we know it today has roots in Canada's lumberjack traditions. Workers in logging camps tested their skills by throwing axes at targets in friendly competitions. It was a way to let off steam while sharpening their skills. The tradition gradually developed into a competitive sport, with the first formal competitions in the early 20th century.
In recent years, axe throwing has enjoyed a revival, attracting people of different ages and backgrounds. From corporate team-building events to competitive leagues, it has carved out a place among leisure sports. Urban axe-throwing venues have helped drive this revival by providing controlled settings where people can learn under the guidance of trained professionals.
Alma Park in Gelsenkirchen brings this tradition into a modern leisure setting, with axe throwing alongside a wide range of other activities. It is an ideal destination for an unusual day out. Axe throwing here offers more than a game: it connects today's adventurers with a centuries-old practice and the thrill of landing that perfect throw.
